We just sent out our yearly check to Beth Israel, and have now paid $60,000 of the $100,000 we pledged for the Rebecca Garrison-Sokoloff Melanoma Research Endowment. Thank you for helping us reach this point!
We also wrote a check for $1,529 to Daughters of Cambodia, to aid in their work of supporting young women who have been sold into the sex trade. We were once again able to support Daughters this year thanks to the generosity of donors to our Google One Today "Remove a Young Woman from the Sex Trade" project. Thank you!! We look forward to continuing to work together in 2016 to help make melanoma a curable disease. Help us begin the year strongly with your tax-deductible donation.

Many, many thanks to all our donors for helping to make this year a success. We have once again emptied our pockets as we close out the old year, and are heading into 2015 with an empty treasury. As a small foundation we do not channel your donations to salaries, office space, mass mailings and telemarketing campaigns, or any other large overhead expenses. We are committed to insuring that your contributions actually go to the causes you want to support. Help us continue our work in the new year with your tax deductible donation. May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Help the White Aisle Foundation "Move against Melanoma" during May. Commit to doing some kind of physical activity to raise funds for melanoma research. Anything counts. Be creative! Complete your activity in one day or throughout the month. Join a team, form your own team, or be a team of one. We already have teams set up to do a 5K walk/run and yoga sun salutations. We are coordinating all our events online, so you don't have to live where the main event is taking place--you can join a team from anywhere! Get more information and create a fundraising page on our Move against Melanoma Web site. Tell your friends what you are doing and ask them to sponsor you. Use your fundraising page to post photos and updates about what you are doing. Let's move together this May to make melanoma a curable disease!! No stealing was involved, but through quite a bit of begging, a little borrowing, lots of hard work, and most of all the incredible generosity of our friends and supporters, we just sent off the first $20,000 installment of our five-year $100,000 pledge to establish the Rebecca Garrison Sokoloff Melanoma Research Endowment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. We still have a long way to go and we are beginning 2014 with empty pockets, but we are grateful beyond measure to all of you who helped make this possible. There is still time to donate if you have not yet made a contribution this year. Science magazine just identified cancer immunotherapy as the scientific breakthrough of the year, and the money we are providing helps fund this research. Melanoma is a horrific disease that strikes and kills young people in alarming numbers, but for the first time in history there is real hope for a cure. We are working toward the day when melanoma will no longer be able to claim beautiful young lives like Rebecca's. Please join us! Happy Thanksgiving to you all! We are truly grateful for the support each and every one of you has given us. As this holiday season begins, we are happy to share two new ways you can support us: Give a White Aisle t-shirt! Looking for a gift that supports a good cause? We are proud to introduce a new line of t-shirts! They come in two designs, a fun shirt with a sun safety message and a black White Aisle logo tee. Just before her 30th birthday, Rebecca wrote a blog post titled "Happy birthday to me. I hope you're feeling generous..." She and her husband Dade were planning a trip to Asia and she decided to use her birthday as a way to raise funds for the people of Cambodia. Here is some of what she said: O.K.... so maybe my birthday isn't for another month ... but I've decided to be really presumptuous and put together a "wish list" for all of those lovely people in my life who may want to get me a gift in celebration of the end of my 20's! I was going to be slightly tactful about this and force my mother to do half the work of getting the word out concerning what I was hoping for, but seeing as I really wanted to explain myself I figured this blog entry may be the best way to go about doing this. As you may know, Dade and I are going to Cambodia this Fall as part of our trip back to Asia. The situation there is of incredible poverty due mainly to the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge regime who ruled for three years, eight months and twenty one days in the late 1970's... In particular the children are victims. They are unable to attend school because their parents cannot afford the supplies required to attend... The problem is, even if you put a child into school, they can be taken right back out by parents who need them to earn money. If we can also provide the basics to families (food, water and shelter) it takes that pressure off of the children, and allows them to have a future. So... I am asking for your help. Rather than buying a traditional birthday gift, buy a well or some food for a family. Actually, some of you may have had no plans at all to send me anything for my birthday. Some of you may be trying to figure out how you ended up with this link, but I'm hitting you up anyway. In keeping with Rebecca's words, our major fundraising event of the year is our annual Rebecca's Birthday Celebration. Last year's events raised more that $15,000 and we are hoping to double that amount this year! Please join us at one of our events (see below for details). If you can't be with us, consider sending Rebecca a birthday gift anyway, by making a tax deductible donation!
